The Athens County Dog Shelter is the county run shelter overseen by the Athens County Commissioners where lost/found dogs are held for three days to allow owners to find their lost pets. Additionally many dogs are abandoned at the shelter by owners and the shelter adopts those dogs out to the general public.
The shelter is located a short 7 miles outside of Athens toward Chauncey. 13333 State Route 13, Millfield, OH 45760
If you are missing a dog it is strongly encouraged that you visit the shelter EVERY day rather than call. Dogs up for adoption can be viewed on the ACDS website.
The dog shelter is also responsible for licensing of dogs in the county. ALL dogs in the county must have a license even if they live inside or have a fenced-in yard. Licensing money is used toward the care of dogs in the shelter and staffing costs.
Dog licenses can be obtained from the Athens County Auditor’s office.
15 South Court Street, Room 330, Athens, Ohio 45701
Hours: Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Dog Licenses can also be obtained from satellite locations. For more information about dog licenses see the Athens County Auditor website.
