Athens County Humane Society

The Athens County Humane Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. They employee one employee, so be patient. They provide monthly low-cost spay/neuter clinics to reduce the homeless pet population in our county. They operate with very limited foster homes in order to assist cats needing homes (foster homes are always needed), there is no physical shelter.

Athens County Dog Shelter

The Athens County Dog Shelter is the county-run shelter overseen by the Athens County Commissioners where lost and found dogs are held for three days to allow owners to find their lost pets. Many dogs are abandoned at the shelter by owners and the shelter adopts those dogs out to the general public.

The Athens County Dog Shelter’s Facebook is very active.

Friends of the Shelter Dogs

Friends of the Shelter Dog’s (FOSD) mission is to stop adoptable dogs from being euthanized simply because there is no room at the Athens County Dog Shelter. They only pull dogs from the county shelter, they do not take pets from the general public. FOSD works with rescue organizations to move dogs to states where dogs are more likely to be adopted. FOSD is always in need of donations as well as short- and long-term foster support.
